5066 - Pair of Chinese Silk Embroideries
An exceptionally
tasteful and well executed pair of embroidered silk
panels, on salmon ground, with long and short satin
stitch and seed stitch, primarily in shades of blue
and beige, showing a rondel of large lotus blossom under
a jeweled canopy, together with chrysanthemums and five
bats and scrolls, with four corner motifs of lotus and
scrolls. In China, the bat has few rivals as a symbol
for good luck and happiness. The word for bat (fu) is
identical in sound with the word for "good fortune"
(fu). Often five bats are shown together to represent
the Five Blessings - long life, riches, health, love
of virtue and a natural death.19th century. Fine condition.
Measurements: 22 1/2" x 16 1/4"; 24"
x 18" framed with gilt wood frame;
