- Spherical Brass Brazier
This large
and very handsome brazier is probably from Syria. It
is decorated in incised, etched and pierced fashion
and consists of several parts: the sphere surmounted
by a knob, a short "stem" consisting of a
small sphere, and all resting on a large round base.
The upper half of the sphere is joined to the lower
half with a hinge. The top half of the sphere is decorated
with eight niches filled with arabesques, above a border
of cartouches filled with Islamic script. The bottom
half of the sphere has a large register with Islamic
script. The large round base shows four eight-point
geometric motifs, all encircled by scroll and floral
borders. The eleven (remaining) pendants suspended from
the top rim of the lower half of the sphere are with
Islamic script and half moon. The piece shows wear and
tear.
I am not
familiar enough with pieces from Syria but think that
the piece dates from the early part of the 20th century.
