- Japanese Lacquer Box
This very
handsome cylindrical box with lid, with black lacquer
exterior and red lacquer interior, rests on four supports
ending in legs. The body is with horizontal ribs and
the metal fittings are etched with hexagons. Similar
boxes are known as kai-oke and were used to store the
shells for kai-awase, the "shell matching game".
I believe the box dates from the late 19th century or
early 20th century of the Meiji period.
Some wear and small chips to lacquer.
Measurements:
H 16 3/4", D 14".

Private Collection.
